 Year 2 Curriculum Map 2019-2020

If you would like to find out more about our exciting curriculum, please get in touch with one of the class teachers - Miss Fairclough or Mrs McArdle and we will be delighted to tell you more!

Our Autumn 2 2019 topic is...

In Literacy with Mrs McArdle, we will be reading 'The man on the moon'. We are also going to be learning about real life astronauts Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake. What questions would you like to ask an astronaut?

Phonics and Reading Schemes

In Key Stage One, we use the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme to learn Phonics. In Year 2, the focus is on learning to spell words following rules. We are learning 'Phase 6'.

Our reading scheme is 'Oxford Reading Scheme'.

In Maths this half term with Miss Fairclough, we are going to be focusing on number operations: addition, subtraction and multiplication. We will be deepening our understanding of our fluency skills with lots of 'Maths talk' where we will be proving, explaining and making links.

In our History lessons this half term, we are going to be studying Christopher Columbus as a significant individual. We will be learning about his exploration missions and finding out 'what he did for us'. We will be learning about how technology has changed sea voyages over time as we compare Christopher Columbus' voyages with a voyage today. We will then compare the life of Christopher Columbus to a more modern explorer - Neil Armstrong.

Do you know who this man is? Why is he famous?

In Geography we will be studying maps as part of our explorers topic! We will be finding out all about map symbols, compass directions and the continents and oceans of the world.

 Design Technology

In D.T we will be making moon buggies!

PE will take place every Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon.

Please ensure all items of PE kit is clearly labelled and in school. They will remain in school until half term. Please ensure you have removed any earrings on this day as children will not be able to do PE with earrings in and that long hair is tied back. Please note that adults in school are not allowed to remove the earrings and plasters over earrings are not permitted.

Weather permitted the majority of the lessons will be outside so please provide warm clothing, e.g. leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

 Religious Education

At Ashton Primary School, we follow the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. Please see our long term curriculum plan to see what is being taught in R.E each half term.

Reading Challenge

This half term's reading challenge is 30 reads! If you read your home reading book 30 times and your parents / carers sign your record to say you have done so, you will be able to go to the special reading treat at the end of the half term. Keep reading!

Here are some words that all children need to be able to read and spell correctly by the end of Year 2. Supporting your child with learning these at home will really help them. If you would like any support or ideas about how you can help your child more, please ask Mrs McArdle or Miss Fairclough.

 Class Dojo

It is fantastic that most of our parents are all connected with Class Dojo to see how your child is getting on with earning their points and checking in with the Class Story.

We regularly use the messaging aspect of Dojo for communication so please look out for any messages and feel free to send either of us any messages or ask any questions.

Please note that it can take up to two working days for staff to reply to messages on Dojo. Messages will not be read or replied to during weeknights between 6pm - 8am or at any time during the weekend.
